Choosing a Pediatrician

Choosing a pediatrician is an important decision, as the physician you choose will be seeing your child through 16 to 18 years of runny noses, earaches, sore throats, high fevers, upset stomachs, bumps and bruises, and the myriad of dramatic physical and psychological developmental milestones that will both thrill and bewilder you.

Before finalizing your decision, take the time to interview prospective physicians and obtain information that will help you choose the type of physician you want to care for your baby. You may want to consider the following criteria:

  • Pediatrician vs. Family Physician
  • Solo Practitioner vs. Group Practice
  • Hospital Affiliation
  • Credentials
  • Office Location
  • Office Hours
  • Office Atmosphere (how you’re treated on the phone, décor, etc)
  • Waiting Time
  • House Calls
  • Protocol for Phone Queries
  • How Emergencies Are Handled
  • Financial Matters (do they participate with your insurance)
  • Physician Style and Philosophy

We provide a list of recommended pediatricians. You may also want to obtain a list of physicians from your insurance company. Remember, though, that you’ll want to take the time to interview all potential candidates for yourself, making sure you settle on a practice that meets your expectations and preferences.
