Hints on Taking the Pill

Begin taking the pill the Sunday after you begin your period.

  • If you start your period on Saturday, take your first pill the next day.
  • If you start your period on Sunday, take your first pill the same day.

Take the pill at a specific time each day. Select the time that is convenient for you--either morning or evening. Select an activity that you do each day, such as eating dinner, going to bed, or brushing your teeth, and take the pill at that time each day.

Take the pill with food or milk. Taking the pill on an empty stomach may cause some nausea.

If you miss a day, take the missed pill as soon as you remember, no matter what time it is. Then, take your next pill at your regular time, even if it will mean taking two pills in a day.

If you miss taking two pills, throw the remainder of the pack away and use another form of birth control, such as a condom with spermicidal jelly or foam. Begin a new pack as directed above on the first Sunday after you begin your period.
